Royal Birkdale has accepted a request from Royal Liverpool to marshal a hole at the 151st Open, which is being held from Sunday 16th July through to Sunday 23rd July 2023. The hole has not been confirmed yet, but it will be a Par 3, either the 13th or the 17th.
This is a great opportunity to watch the world’s greatest golfers up close. Tickets for The Open are priced at £450 for a week pass or £100 for the competition days and were available by ballot. The oversubscribed ballot closed a few weeks ago.
As a volunteer marshal, you will receive a pass for all eight days, a daily food allowance for the marshalling days, a car park pass and 151st Open clothing.
There are eight days of practice and competition, and these days are split into morning and afternoon sessions, so there are 16 sessions to fill. Marshals are required to commit to 5 of these 16 sessions.
The length of time for each shift will vary depending on the number of tee times on the day. A shift will be between 4 hours and 5 hours. Typically, 4 hours on Saturday/Sunday and 5 hours on Thursday/Friday. The morning shifts will start one and a half hours after the first tee time, as our expected hole is on the back 9 (0745-0800).
The age criteria is that a marshal must not be under the age of 18.
Transport will be by train or car. The trains run from Hillside to Moorfields (36 minutes) and Moorfields to Hoylake (31 minutes). Alternatively, to travel by car we will organise car sharing with marshals on the same shifts. We will also accommodate family and friends being on the same shifts.
In the first instance, we are asking members to commit to 5 sessions of volunteering and then we can work out the specific dates and times later.
If you are interested in volunteering, can you fill out the below form and I or the hole controller, Dave Wordsworth, will be in touch.
